A young couple on their way to the hospital for the delivery of their first child were killed in a crash in New York City, with emergency responders delivering the baby alive at the scene.
The couple, Nathan and Raizy Glauber, are Orthodox Jews and were using a car service to go to the hospital, NBC News reported. As they were traveling, the car carrying the expectant parents was hit by another vehicle at an intersection in Brooklyn, Hasidic community activist and family friend Isaac Abraham said.
Nathan Glauber was taken to Beth Israel Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His wife was taken to Bellevue and died there, the New York Post reported.
“The child is in a serious condition in Beth Israel Hospital, in Manhattan,” Abraham said. “Now we just pray with the child that all medical efforts keep him alive.”
In the crash, which happened at around midnight, the car carrying the couple struck a tractor trailer, the New York Post noted. A third car then slammed into the parents car.
The driver and a passenger in the BMW which struck and killed the expectant parents fled the scene on foot, police said.

The parents were both 21 years old and “just coming off a joyous holiday as Purim,” Abraham noted. He said the community is mourning the expectant parents killed in the crash and praying for their child born at the scene.
