Former President George H.W. Bush is heading home after being discharged from The Methodist Hospital in Houston today after being treated there for 52 days.

As The Inquisitr previously reported , a Bush family spokesman said yesterday that President Bush had a good chance of being released soon as his condition was gradually improving. George H.W. Bush, 88, was first admitted to the hospital on November 23 after contracting bronchitis. He was sent to intensive care during the Christmas holiday after developing a persistent fever and other complications but was later moved out of the ICU ward .

President Bush, the nation’s 41st commander in chief, released the following statement upon his release from the hospital:

“I am deeply grateful for the wonderful doctors and nurses at Methodist who took such good care of me. Let me add just how touched we were by the many get-well messages we received from our friends and fellow Americans. Your prayers and good wishes helped more than you know, and as I head home my only concern is that I will not be able to thank each of you for your kind words.”

One of the president’s doctors indicated that he won’t need to take any special medication at home but will continue his physical therapy program according to the Washington Post . The former president has been confined to a wheelchair for more than a year now due to a loss of balance caused by lower-body parkinsonism.

As president, George H.W. Bush led the international coalition that pushed Iraqi forces out of Kuwait in 1991. He also served as a congressman, ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, CIA director, and as vice president for two terms under President Ronald Reagan. He served as combat fighter pilot during World War II.
