Erika Kirk may have made a statement without saying a word when she posted a throwback photo of herself and her late husband wearing “Make America Great Again” hats—just days after Usha Vance said in an interview that she does not own one.
The Instagram Story showed Erika and Charlie Kirk holding each other in a deep embrace, both wearing the signature red MAGA caps. On its own, it could have been a tribute to her late husband, who was killed in September 2025. But its timing—coming shortly after Usha Vance’s comments—has led many to speculate that the post may have been seen as a subtle political jab.
Usha Vance spoke with NBC News in late March, and seemed to be blindsided when she was asked whether she owned a MAGA hat. She seemed hesitant when she responded by saying, “I don’t really own any hats. I think I have a Disneyland hat.” She then added, “Not a hat lady.” The comment was quick but awkward, and the interviewer quickly moved on to another question.

Of course, the Internet noticed her faux pas and soon they debated Vance’s relationship to the MAGA movement, especially because she is the wife of Vice President JD Vance. Online sleuths quickly found images of Usha’s entire fashion history, where she was wearing many different hats. While many correctly pointed out that she did indeed own some hats, others wondered what her intention behind the statement was. It’s no secret that MAGA followers are more extreme than the an average Donald Trump fan.
Erika’s post immediately sparked a flurry of conversation as they contrasted Charlie’s widow as being loyal to the brand, while Usha appeared to be noncommittal in her answers. Others felt that it was a coincidence and that Erika Kirk was merely sharing a memory of her and her husband sharing loving moment.
One of the reasons that the situation of Erika posting the photo has sparked so much interest is all the talk about her and JD Vance. Their hug at a Turing Point USA event fueled unfounded rumors and had netizens speculating about what their relationship was really like.
Q: Do you own a MAGA hat?
Usha Vance: Um… I don’t really own any hats. I think I have a, uh, a Disneyland hat, I wanna say. Not a hat lady. pic.twitter.com/Pkv91HGvuY

Another reason that the image is stirring debates are the questions surrounding Usha Vance’s political stance. She has spoken openly about her and JD Vance having “different starting points” but that they try to learn from each other. “But one of the benefits of being in a marriage, as opposed to, you know, being – I’m not his staffer, I’m not involved in this in any professional sense – is that there’s no expectation that we are going to see eye to eye on everything, ” she said.
Usha stated that they have “open-minded” conversations and she tries to “provide meaningful input from, you know, the perspective of someone who loves him and wants him to succeed,” Vance said. “So, even if we don’t agree, I think it’s always very productive,” she explained her more nuanced position.
Meanwhile, Erika Kirk and TPUSA have strong ties to Trump and the MAGA movement. Her very identity is publicly ensconced with the ideology and has become her brand. But whether she succeeded to bring her message home to Usha, if that was her intention, will only be noted at the next MAGA rally.
