Spider-Man has allegedly found its new leading man in the shape of Dylan O’Brien, according to a Reddit user with alleged inside information.
Of course, at the moment, this story hasn’t been confirmed in the slightest, and should be taken with a huge heap of salt. However there is evidence to suggest that it could be true.
Redditleaker23456 took to Reddit to reveal, via their source, that Dylan O’Brien had wowed Sony and Marvel during his audition process.
“So Dylan O’Brien is pretty much our new Spidey from the look of things,” the user wrote. “A source tells me he gave Sony the audition of his life, who by the way, absolutely loved what they saw from him. Amy Pascal and [the] team knew they had their Spider-Man.”
Dylan O’Brien was one of the first names mentioned when it was announced that Andrew Garfield wouldn’t be reprising his role as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man and the character would be getting a reboot.
The 23-year-old has previously appeared in The Internship opposite Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson while he already has his own franchise in the shape of The Maze Runner . The first instalment to this dystopian series was released in September to impressive reviews and an even more impressive box office total. In fact, from its $34 million budget it ultimately grossed $340.8 million, and a sequel is already in the works.
A few days after Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man merger was announced, Dylan O’Brien and Logan Lerman were teased as the front-runners for the part. And, according to Redditleaker23456, it turns out that the pair went neck and neck in auditions, with O’Brien just eclipsing his rival when they met up with the film’s producers.
“Sony apparently started leaning towards O’Brien over Lerman when they figured Dylan had a better grasp and feel of the tone they were going for,” they explained.
However the reddit user refused to 100% confirm that O’Brien would end up playing Spider-Man, instead adding, “Mind you, anything could happen from now until the official announcement.” He still noted that he is “99.9 percent” certain that O’Brien will be confirmed though, speculating that the announcement will be made “somewhere in mid-March to early-April.” After releasing his original post, he then went back to add, “It is official, Dylan has signed up as the new webhead.”
While Reddit is hardly a reliable source, redditleaker23456 does have a reputation for revealing huge superhero news before it officially hits the presses. According to Movie Pilot , he revealed that Sony and Marvel were collaborating on a Spider-Man movie months before the studio did so.
Spider-Man is expected to make his Marvel debut in 2016, before he then appears in his own Sony film, which is likely to be directed by Cabin In The Woods’ Drew Goddard, in 2017.
