A viral video of a dog licking a lemon and then reacting hilariously has led the RSPCA to release a warning to copycat owners who might be tempted to give their own canines the sour treat.

You can check out the video, which was uploaded to YouTube by MrPhu9 and is simply entitled “Golden Retriever Tasting Lemon,” below. It will almost certainly bring a smile to your face.

It’s hard not to be slightly overjoyed by the dogs reaction, which saw him jump up and down repeatedly in a disgusted fashion because of just how sour it was. However, he was clearly intrigued by its taste because he returns for a second lick almost instantly.

The problem is, the dog, which was a golden retriever, was in medical jeopardy because he had been subjected to the fruit.

People soon took to the comments box to declare, “Lemons, limes and oranges are not safe for dogs,” while another added, “Don’t feed your dog citrus! It is poisonous! Also cute.”

Other users soon looked to combat these complaints by declaring that because the pooch had only had a mere lick of the fruit, he would be completely fine, though.

All of these enraged responses soon saw the video go viral, and it has already been watched close to 200,000 times in less than two days.

According to the ASPCA, otherwise known as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, lemons can cause cats and dogs to suffer from vomiting and diarrhea, as it is toxic to them.

Meanwhile the RSPCA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals , decided to release a warning to owners because of the recent spate of videos depicting cats and dogs eating lemons.

The Metro have reported that an RSPCA spokesperson declared, “People may think that the dogs’ reactions in these videos are cute — but the reality is very different. Citrus fruits such as lemons and limes are unpleasant for dogs and can cause vomiting, diarrhoea [sic] and depression. We would strongly urge members of the public not to take part in this latest harmful ‘craze’ as they would be putting their animal’s health and welfare at risk.”

Over the last few years, around dozens upon dozens of videos of dogs, cats, and other animals eating citrus fruits have been uploaded, and they’ve also accumulated hundreds of thousands of views.
