Director Paul Feig Fights Criticism Over All-Female ‘Ghostbusters 3’ Cast

Director of the future Ghostbusters 3 movie Paul Feig has revealed that the reboot will feature a cast of “hilarious women.” Feig, who directed the movie Bridesmaids, , is writing the screenplay with Parks and Recreation comedy writer Katie Dippold. However, backlash has already formed, with Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore in the original movies, saying that an all-woman Ghostbusters could not be considered a bonafide sequel.

Paul Feig revealed the Ghostbusters 3 project on Twitter earlier this week.

It’s official. I’m making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That’s who I’m gonna call.

The new film is considered a reboot, with little or nothing to do with the original film, although Ghostbusters 1 and 2 director Ivan Reitman will be a producer.

Not everyone is happy with the Ghostbusters reboot, though. According to the Telegraph , Ernie Hudson , one of the original Ghostbusters, was unhappy about the project.

“I heard it was going to be a total reboot, and that it would have nothing to do with the other two movies. If it has nothing to do with the other two movies, and it’s all female, then why are you calling it Ghostbusters?”

Ernie goes on to explain why he thinks the all-female Ghostbusters 3 is a bad idea.

“I love females. I hope that if they go that way at least they’ll be funny, and if they’re not funny at least hopefully it’ll be sexy. I love the idea of including women, I think that’s great. But all-female I think would be a bad idea. I don’t think the fans want to see that.”

Hudson’s comments might be considered sexist, but it might also just be sour grapes. The actor went on to explain that it would be wrong to do another film that didn’t include the old guys… and that didn’t include him.

Others have accused the all-female cast as being nothing more than a gimmick to sell Ghostbusters 3 . Feig responded to that criticism saying , “When people accuse it of being a gimmick I go, why is a movie starring women considered a gimmick and a movie starring men is just a normal movie?”

Despite the backlash, Feig appears to be having fun with the movie. He’s hinted that Ghostbusters 3 will feature a host of new origin stories for the new cast, and will be “ really scary ” in addition to be funny.
