Only nine other players in MLB history have more hits than Derek Jeter. The New York Yankees star grabbed his 3,283rd hit last night during the Yankees’ 2-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox, putting him in a tie with Willie Mays on the all-time hits list.
Jeter said that he’s concentrating on getting the Yankees more wins, especially now that the baseball season is nearing its end.
Jeter said:
“It’s kind of hard to think about it now because you’re trying to win games, especially this time of year. But I’d be lying to you if I didn’t think it was special.”
NBC Sports reports that Jeter was in the designated hitter’s spot on Thursday night due to an injured ankle, but he was still able to hit an RBI single in the seventh inning to give the Yankees some cushion during the game.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said:
“(Jeter did it) on probably about one ankle… That’s who he is. He’s a fighter and he finds a way, and he gets the big hit tonight. It was impressive.”
Jeter will probably end the season in 10th place but it is possible that he overtakes Eddie Collins by the end of the season. Jeter would have to get 32 hits in the next 30 games to end the season in 9th on the all-time hits list.
