Yes, it is true. Katie Holmes is returning to television in her first extended appearance since her Dawson’s Creek days. Ms. Holmes will be appearing in Showtime’s original crime drama, Ray Donovan, alongside Liev Schreiber and Paula Malcomson and, according to E! Online , Katie will be cast in a prominent, season-long role.

Of particular interest to Dawson’s Creek fans is the fact that both Ms. Holmes and Joshua Jackson will be performing in shows on the same network, as Mr. Jackson currently stars on Showtime’s The Affair . Perhaps a crossover episode (or several) could come to pass in the future? It would certainly be interesting to see Holmes’ Joey Potter and Jackson’s Pacey Witter together again, even briefly.

Ms. Holmes will be introduced into the current storyline of Ray Donovan, when her character’s father, Andrew Finney ( Deadwood’s Ian McShane), turns to Ray for help. Katie’s character, Paige, is described as a sagacious, fashionable businesswoman and one can deduce by the steady recurrence of Katie’s role that her character will develop some kind of a connection with Donovan.

Does this news mean Katie Holmes has abandoned her film career? Not at all. People magazine reports that Ms. Holmes is set to star in All We Had , which is the first novel from painter and sculptor Annie Weatherwax. All We Had will also be Katie’s directorial debut.

“Holmes, 35, will play Rita, a mother teetering on the edge of poverty when she and her 13-year-old daughter are kicked out of their California home by an unsympathetic landlord. They head East in their battered Ford Escort, ultimately finding a new place to call home in Fat River, a small town with colorful residents.”

Katie will be working alongside producer Jane Rosenthal on the project, as well as Josh Boone, who recently directed The Fault in Our Stars. Boone will be writing the screenplay.

“I am very excited and honored to be collaborating with Jane and Josh on this project and look so forward to bringing Annie’s incredible characters to the screen,” Holmes said.

Ms. Holmes appearance on Ray Donovan will no doubt enable her to spend more time with daughter Suri, while Holmes will surely bring her parenting experiences to bear in All We Had , proving, once again, that Katie’s heart will always be dedicated to the bond between mother and daughter.

This past Christmas , Katie set aside her own feelings and concerns when she invited Tom Cruise home for the holiday with the hopes that it would give young Suri the best possible holiday memory.
