Since the news that director David Fincher had Gone Girl up his sleeve, there’s been rumors surrounding who will play the complex role of Amy Dunne.

It was widely suggests that Fincher had his eyes set on popular leading ladies to co-star along with Ben Affleck in his Gone Girl adaptation. However according to The Hollywood Reporter , it’s said that Fincher wants to go for someone who’s a little bit off the radar, which has led him to Rosamund Pike for the lead.

At first we thought Fincher might choose Reese Witherspoon, given that she bought the rights to the novel , and will produce the film. Days before Rosamund Pike entered the picture, Fincher was said to have his sights on Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron, and Natalie Portman.

While we agree that these actresses could have nailed the role, a relatively unknown such as Pike will give the actress a shroud of mystery that the character needs to have.

Rosamund was last seen in the underwhelming Jack Reacher , but up next she has a trilogy titled Edgar Wright, The World’s End , which may give her some visibility in the industry. We can’t really see Pike turning Fincher down, especially after what he did for Rooney Mara’s career when he cast her in the adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo .

Although the role of Amy Dunne isn’t nearly as gritty or complex, it’s still a role that if played right could be a psychological thrill for any up and coming actress.

As the story goes, dutiful Manhattanite wife Amy Dunne goes missing on her fifth wedding anniversary. An emotionally challenged husband, Nick, becomes the suspect of the missing persons’ case turned presumed murder, and is sent on a treasure hunt of gifts that may or may not reveal Amy’s true whereabouts.

Gone Girl is expected to start shooting in the fall.
