The Early Life of David Bowie in Memoriam
Bowie was born in South London as David Robert Jones on January 8, 1947. His life encompassed a variety of talents; he was a musician, songwriter, painter, record producer, and actor. He played a variety of musical instruments, but according to Wikipedia , his first instrument was a plastic saxophone, which was a gift from his mother. He got his first real saxophone in 1962 and began playing with a local band called the Konrads at age 16. Later, he played in another band called the King Bees. As a youngster, he had dreamed of being like Mick Jagger, and he began to pursue that dream. From there, he went to a technical college, learning graphic design and music.
David struggled under the stage name Davy Jones, which led to confusion with the Monkee’s star Davy Jones, so he adopted the name Bowie, in honor of Jim Bowie. His early career was frustrating and included five singles all with different bands. The first single, “Liza Jane,” David performed with the King Bees. It was followed by a second single, “Pity the Fool,” with Manish Boys. The name change seemed to be lucky as he went from Davy Jones number two to David Bowie.
