The Dallas Cowboys are interested in upgrading their quarterback position, and Robert Griffin III just might be the solution , according to NFL.com.
Jerry Jones wants another Super Bowl championship, and he has proven that he is willing to do just about anything to make that happen.
For years, the Dallas Cowboys desperately needed help on the offensive line. Jerry Jones, however, preferred flashier picks at positions like wide receiver and corner backs. When he finally realized that his plan wasn’t working, he adapted and drafted Travis Frederick, Zach Martin, and Tyronn Smith, all of whom are among the best at their respective positions.
After a miserable season, one in which the Dallas Cowboys lost seven straight games after Tony Romo was sidelined with a collarbone injury, Jerry Jones now realizes that the Dallas Cowboys have neglected the quarterback position for far too long. Romo is a gifted quarterback, but the team cannot win a championship when he is not on the field.
Veterans quarterbacks Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassel proved that they could not handle the role. Kellen Moore finally got to play in his first regular season NFL game this weekend, but he did not prove to the Dallas Cowboys that their backup quarterback position is fine. Even if Moore flourishes in the final two games of the season, another quarterback will still be added.
Jerry Jones and his staff will definitely be taking closer looks at college quarterbacks over the coming weeks to see if there is someone worth taking in the NFL Draft. The team will also scour free agency to see if a capable veteran somehow becomes available. If he could, Jones would probably ask Troy Aikman to leave the commentating booth and come out of retirement.
Robert Griffin III had so much potential when he was acquired by the Washington Redskins. The team gave up a king’s ransom to make him their starting quarterback. Things obviously did not work out, and the former Baylor Bears star was relegated to being the third quarterback on the depth chart. His release is said to be guaranteed this off season, especially since Kirk Cousins has started thriving.
To his credit, Robert Griffin III kept his name value high by not pouting when he was demoted by Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden. Instead, he opted to continue working hard and supporting his teammates. Griffin said all of the right things, even though the media was waiting for frustration to kick in. NFL teams noticed that.
While he certainly can find an NFL team that will let him started immediately, Robert Griffin III might be enticed by the Dallas Cowboys. He knows that Tony Romo is not going to be around forever. He might not be around next year if the collarbone does not hold up. The opportunity to take over one of the most storied franchises in sports might be really appealing to Griffin.
Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan would need to open up his playbook a bit if the Dallas Cowboys were to acquire Robert Griffin III. He’s far from being the same type of passer that Tony Romo is. Linehan and his staff would need to do some further research on read option techniques because that would make Griffin quite the weapon for the Cowboys.
If nothing else, Robert Griffin III would simply be a wiser choice than Johnny Manziel, the talented Cleveland Browns quarterback whose lack of maturity has been embarrassing for the NFL. Jerry Jones has a thing for dual threat quarterbacks. He would be wise to choose the guy that maintained his professionalism and composure during rough times.
Robert Griffin III should be the backup quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys next season.
