It may not impress many, but the current WWE Championship match penciled in for WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans has been revealed. During an interview in India while visiting to promote WWE’s appearance in December, Triple H stated that although he is not going to reveal any of the matches for next year’s event, the goal is always to make it better than the year before.
This year, the WWE Championship match was between champion Bray Wyatt and challenger Randy Orton. This match, which was filled with theatrics all throughout, was heavily criticized by many. The match was also the culmination of Orton feuding with Wyatt starting in the latter part of 2016, only to join him, win the SmackDown Live Tag Team Championship with him, and eventually turn his back on Wyatt to reveal that was his plan all along.
For the next WrestleMania , the WWE Championship picture looks to be what a number of fans would consider underwhelming, based on the reaction usually given to both potential competitors. According to the Wrestling Observer , the current talks is for Jinder Mahal to retain the title until the “grandest stage of them all” on April 8. His opponent is rumored to be John Cena. Mahal also mentioned during a Facebook Live interview that his dream opponent for WrestleMania would indeed be Cena.
Subsequently, this also means that Cena is a frontrunner to win the Royal Rumble match on January 28 in Philadelphia. This would tie Cena with Steve Austin for most Royal Rumble wins in the history of the series, previously winning in both 2008 and 2013. This would also be circled around Cena breaking Ric Flair’s record of the most recognized world championship reigns in pro wrestling history.
Cena and Mahal have previously faced each other in the ring on television, as they competed on SmackDown Live leading into the SummerSlam pay-per-view. However, the match was interrupted by Baron Corbin, as he attacked Cena. Corbin then tried to cash his Money in the Bank contract on Mahal, but was unsuccessful due to distraction from Cena.
With the WWE Championship once again being at a lesser level of a marquee feel, there are some who believe that Cena breaking the record against Mahal, who had no credibility before winning the title, and has not brought much credibility to the title since having it, would also be underwhelming.
