Jose Mourinho has denied that Chelsea are in the market to buy Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.
Rumors surrounding the future of Ronaldo at the Bernabeu have been circulating all week , and it has been suggested that they were set to contest his signature with Manchester United. Both clubs were allegedly prepared to give Madrid $100 million to acquire Ronaldo’s services, and they were even ready to offer the Portuguese icon $500,000 a week to join.
However, during a press conference ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Swansea, Mourinho categorically denied that Chelsea were interested in signing Ronaldo.
When asked about the potential transfer, Mourinho swiftly declared , “Forget it.” The fact that he didn’t even entertain such an addition to his squad suggests that Mourinho is more than pleased with his team.
Over the summer, Chelsea purchased Filipe Luis and Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid, while they also brought in Loic Remy and Cesc Fabregas from QPR and Barcelona respectively. These transfers have arguably given the Blues the strongest squad in the Premier League, and it has also helped to correct the issues that led to Chelsea capitulating during their run-in for the title last season.
Costa, who scored a hat-trick earlier today when Chelsea played Swansea, has been especially brilliant since he arrived at Stamford Bridge. During the same press conference, Mourinho revealed that he wasn’t surprised by the striker’s stunning goal return since he arrived in the country, which, at the time of the question, was four goals in three games and now is seven in four.
“When we bought him, we were very optimistic,” he declared. “His profile as a player and also as a person, is easy to adapt. He’s a player who is also part of a team and we knew the team was going in a certain direction and was waiting for a player like him. We were very optimistic, but his start was good. Three matches, three victories and four goals and good performances. It was a good start.”
Mourinho and Ronaldo have previously worked together at Real Madrid. During their three seasons together, it’s believed that the duo became very close. The striker has also previously declared that Mourinho is the greatest manager that he has ever worked under. This is high praise indeed, especially when you consider that Ronaldo worked under Sir Alex Ferguson during his time at Old Trafford.
