Someone just got very inventive in the streets of London by using popular football players Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to help clean up cigarette butts.
While it may be unlikely that either Ronaldo or Messi actually smoke, whoever came up with the sign below ensures that their fans who do puff away at “cancer sticks” use their butts (excuse the expression) to vote for their favorite player.
While most people extol the virtues of thinking outside the box, this useful creation asks people to rather think inside the box instead, and to vote with their butts, stating that “Litter is in our hands. Let’s wise up and bin it.”

While it is unclear where the imaginative ashtray is exactly located, the Mirror says it is in a London street. The premise is that basically once you’ve smoked your cigarette down to the butt, you stub it on the metal plate and pop it through the appropriate hole to vote for the footballer that you consider to be the best player in the world .
The mystery is cleared up a little, however, by Complex Magazine, where they state that the inventive cigarette butt cleansing system was placed there by the Hubbub Project and that it has been installed near the Embankment in London.
According to the organization’s website, the Hubbub Project consists of “an international team of scientists, humanists, artists, clinicians, public health experts, broadcasters and public engagement professionals.”
“We explore the dynamics of rest, noise, tumult, activity and work, as they operate in mental health, neuroscience, the arts and the everyday.”
The results so far are probably not totally accurate, but while Lionel Messi was voted UEFA European footballer of the year, beating out both Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez, it looks like so far, smoking fans prefer Ronaldo as the best player in the world.
Uploaded to Imgur on Thursday, the image is getting plenty of attention, with almost 150,000 views at the time of writing this article, and naturally plenty of word play on the term “butt” in the comments section.
One says, “So Ronaldo fans smoke more?” while another puns rather aptly, “Stops people from making our world so messi.”
