Cops are dealing Doritos at Hempfest. The 22-year-old Seattle festival hosts thousands of guests every year. Traditionally, the celebration was considered a “protestival.” However, this year’s festival is legal.
Law enforcement officials will not be making arrests for possession this year. Instead, they are joining the party by handing out bags of Doritos corn chips.
As reported by ABC News, the officers are looking forward to handing out snacks instead of tickets:
“I think it’s going to be a lot of fun… It’s meant to be ironic. The idea of police passing out Doritos at a festival that celebrates pot, we’re sure, is going to generate some buzz.”
Washington state is one of only two US states that legalized recreational use of marijuana . Residents over the age of 21 in Washington and Colorado are permitted to possess and smoke marijuana.
Although it is legal, there are restrictions. Most of the restrictions mirror liquor laws. Residents cannot sell marijuana or drive under the influence. Use in public places is prohibited. However, outdoor festivals are an exception.
This year’s festival is expected to draw record crowds, as residents celebrate the new law. Organizers expect more than 80,000 guests each day. The festival will last through the weekend.
Daily admission is optional. However, organizers are asking for donations.
There are six stages throughout the festival grounds. More than 100 live musical performances are scheduled in the next three days.
In addition to the cops dealing Doritos, hundreds of vendors will be selling food, artwork, accessories, and clothing. Information will also be available on responsible use of marijuana.
As reported by Statesman Journal, marijuana is legal in Washington. However, federal laws have not changed. Hempfest executive director Vivian McPeak explains:
“It’s going to be the most interesting Hempfest we’ve ever had because it’s going to be part victory celebration… That said, we feel it’s very important to remind everyone that as long as it’s still a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act, it’s not legal anywhere. The job’s not done yet.”
