Community may get its six season after all — still no word on the movie.
The fan-favorite show was canned by NBC after its fifth season, but the online streaming site, Hulu, is reportedly in talks to bring the show back .
Fans have been quite vocal about saving the show, adopting the tagline “six seasons and a movie” to describe their hopes for its run.
Sony Pictures Television, the show’s producer, has been also proactive about finding a new home for Community after the NBC cancellation .
“You can’t get to six seasons and a movie without six seasons,” Sony Pictures Television co-president Jamie Erlicht told The Hollywood Reporter on May 14, a week after NBC canceled the series. “We, more than any other studios, fight for shows that we believe in. This show had a remarkable history. There are real conversations we need to have with everyone as soon as we get back. We’ve been on the receiving end of some phone calls, but we really need to get together with the Community team and have real conversations and figure out the future. If there’s any show that should have a future or could have a future, it really feels like Community is the one.”
Hulu would seem a good landing point for Community. Episodes were available for streaming the day after they aired, and Community consistently ranked as one of the most-watched shows on Hulu.
Acquiring Community would also fit Hulu’s long-term plans. The company’s new CEO Mike Hopkins vowed to quadruple the streaming service’s investment in original content in the next year, and Community could come as a ready-made package.
Dan Harmon, the show’s creator, seemed initially reluctant to launch a campaign to bring back Community, but said he has come around to the idea.
“I said ‘eh’ on a Friday afternoon, I will change it to a ‘sure, let’s talk’ on Monday morning and Sony can do their thing,” he wrote. “I’m not going to be the guy that re-cancels canceled Community .”
Hulu officials haven’t spoken publicly about the possible return of Community.
