Less than a week after the regular season ended it looks like another head coaching vacancy has been filled. Chip Kelly, head coach at the University of Oregon, is close to signing a deal to leave Oregon and become the Cleveland Browns next head coach.

Much like the Kansas City Chiefs wasted no time signing Andy Reid, the Cleveland Browns wasted no time filling their coaching vacancy.

This news may come as a surprise, it was previously reported that Kelly was going to interview with the Buffalo Bill and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kelly will be taking over for Pat Shurmur. Shurmur was fired as the Browns head coach after two disappointing seasons.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rappaport the Browns met with Chip Kelly last Friday in Arizona, days before he coached the Oregon Ducks to a victory in the Tostitos’ Fiesta Bowl against Kansas State. Whatever the Browns pitched Kelly he must have bought into it.

During his four years as Oregon’s head coach Kelly led the team to a 46-7 record and ran an innovative spread-option style offense that helped turn him into a hot name on the NFL market.

Since re-entering the league in 1999 the Brown have made the playoffs twice and lost both times in the first round. The signing of Chip Kelly could be huge for Cleveland.

Before the Fiesta Bowl the coach kept silent to the media about his possible NFL prospects and wanted his team focus on the game:

Kelly’s choice to keep his team focused worked even though it looks like he where he was going before the Fiesta Bowl.

What do you think, is Cleveland the best landing sport for Chip Kelly as an NFL head coach?
