First responders in West Virginia were treated to a full-blown security scare with the discovery of IEDs, an AK-47, and live chickens at the scene of a single-car accident.
Police say a southbound 1998 Ford Explorer carrying 35-40 live chickens, improvised explosives, weapons (including an AK-47), ammunition, and a quart jar full of marijuana flipped over in Roane County, West Virginia, near the Amma exit at 3:30 a.m. on Friday morning.
Roane County 911 received a call about the accident, and when firefighters reached the wreck, they found the Ford Explorer had rolled over and was in the median between the north- and southbound lanes.
Seth Grim of Emmaus, a small town in eastern Pennsylvania, suffered minor head and upper torso injuries in the accident and was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center.
A local news station, WOWK-TV , reports that Grim informed the local State Police that his dog tried to jump out of the SUV, causing him to lose control, and may have contributed to the accident. The dog was struck and killed by another vehicle.
When emergency crews arrived on the scene, the chickens were out of the vehicle and running loose.
The state police who investigated the crash found an AK-47 and a large amount of ammunition in the back of Grim’s vehicle. Other guns were removed from the wreckage, but the State Troopers have not commented on what caliber these weapons might be or how many were found.
Because of the improvised explosive devices found in the vehicle, the West Virginia State Police Bomb Squad was called in from Williamson to assist. A 500-yard perimeter was set, closing the interstate near Amma for more than four hours before the wreckage was determined to be safe for removal. The bomb squad was able to identify the explosives as altered fireworks.
The explosive devices were removed and rendered harmless. Seth Grim, 21, has been arrested on a charge of possessing a controlled substance with intent to distribute. The State Police have said that further charges are pending. He is currently being held in the South Central Regional Jail on a $25,000 bond.
Grim’s car wreck is the biggest chicken spill on a public road since 2012, when the Inquisitr reported that 37,000 pounds of processed poultry hit the asphalt on U.S. Route 422 in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania.
It has been reported that some of the chickens died at the scene. No official word has been released on the fact that the driver was in possession of an AK-47.
