Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks, has rolled out another trailer to promote the film. The trailer gives a more insightful look into how Greengrass plans to tell the story of how a ship was held hostage by Somali pirates.

Based on a true story, Captain Phillips looks to be a true vehicle for Tom Hanks to remind those Academy Voters that Cloud Atlas never happened. The film looks to be pretty intense in general, with shouting and guns galore as the pirates battle Tom Hanks and his men.

The official synopsis of Captain Phillips is as follows:

“The true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.”

It was announced in July that Captain Phillips will make its debut and open the New York Film Festival. At the time Director of Programming and Selection Committee Chair Kent Jones said of the film :

“At this point in his working life, Paul Greengrass has become a master of immersive reality-based narratives set along geopolitical fault lines – in this case, the 2009 seizure of the Maersk Alabama cargo ship by four Somali pirates. I’m excited that this tough, tense, real-life thriller, capped by the remarkable performances of Tom Hanks and four brilliant first-time Somali actors (Barkhad Abdi, Faysal Ahmed, Barkhad Abdirahman and Mahat M. Ali), is opening the 51st edition of the festival.”

The film is based on the Maersk Alabama hijacking. Captain Richard Phillips and several crew members were captured by Somali pirates after boarding their ship. This capture happened on April 12, 2009. At the time, it was the sixth vessel to be attacked in a week for tens of millions of dollars.
