Bugaboo is recalling more than 50,000 of its Donkey and Cameleon model strollers. The company issued the recall after finding out the the handle poses a falling and choking hazard to children.

Bugaboo is famous for introducing $1,000 strollers to the world. Founded in the Netherlands, the company stated that a button on the stroller’s carrycot can disengage, causing the handle to detach.

The detached handle can injure tots. The Los Angeles Times reports that the recall affects 46,300 strollers in the United States and about 4,440 in Canada.

The recall comes after the company received 58 reports of handles detaching, though there were no reported injuries. Customers are advised to remove the handle from the strollers immediately and contact Bugaboo, which will issue a free replacement handle.

The pricey strollers are sold at retailers like Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Toys R Us, and online retailers, including the company’s website . They came with a base, sun canopy, and other accessories in various colors, according to Consumer Reports . A fabric tag on the side of the stroller identifies it as Bugaboo and the model’s name.

The Bugaboo Donkey is included in the recall. The stroller is probably best known for its ability to convert from a single-occupancy stroller into a side-by-side double. It was sold between January 2011 and December 2012 and retailed for $1,200 to $1,600. The Cameleon was sold between September 2009 and June 2012. It retailed for a more reasonable $980.

Bugaboo has said that the strollers are safe to use with the handle removed while you wait for a replacement. For more information, consumers are urged to call Bugaboo International at (800) 460-2922. Their service hours are Monday through Friday 7 am until 4 pm PT. Consumers can also visit their website and click “Important Quality Initiative,” or email [email protected].
