While some might be watching Bruno Mars at the BRIT Awards there’s another star emerging from Mars’ camp. Bruno’s very own trumpet player, James King made a special appearance at Wagener-Salley High on Friday during a Black History Program which was held in the South Carolina school.

Bruno’s trumpet player made an appearance at the school in order to encourage students to dream big and inspire the young minds of the South Carolina school. In addition to speaking with the students the Bruno Mars trumpet player even performed a small song for the students and faculty members.

Bruno Mars of course is a Grammy-winning artist, whose last huge show was at the Super Bowl Halftime. King performed with Mars and has also recorded with international recording artists such as Angie Stone, Mary J. Blige, and new pop star Janelle Monae.

To get the speech started King began his speech with a quote based off of the “three C’s.” “Doubt has killed more dreams than fear ever will,” said King. His three C’s are commitment, consistence and confidence, which he attests to helping him accomplish his goals even at the worst of times. In order for those words to sink in, Mars’ trumpet player made the students repeat the three C’s several times, and even included that he believed that civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was similarly inspired by the three C’s.

Other bits of advice given from the trumpet player include, “Once you pursue your passion, there will be a fulfillment in life that won’t be obtained through anything else. One thing about being confident is to love yourself, to believe in yourself.”

Instead of playing a Bruno Mars song, which he’s known for these days, the trumpet player decided to play “When the Saints Go Marching In” and included participation from the audience in stomps and claps to keep with the song’s natural tempo.

As for James King’s “boss” Bruno Mars, he recently kicked off the second leg of his Moonshine Jungle tour, which is currently touring in support of his widely successful sophomore album Unorthodox Jukebox .

In addition to his well received performance at the Super Bowl, Bruno Mars picked up one award during the 2014 Grammys ceremony. Out of four nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Vocal Album, Bruno took home the award for Best Pop Vocal Album for Unorthodox Jukebox .
