Bruno Mars has just begun his Moonshine Jungle Tour with the first performance on Saturday in Washington, D.C., at the Verizon Center. The 27-year-old is featuring tracks from his most recent album, Unorthodox Jukebox .

“So thankful for all the love during the most difficult time in my life,” he tweeted before the tour began. “Ill be back on my feet again soon. Thats what mom wants, she told me.”

His mother passed away due to an aneurysm this month at the age of 55 and the pop star hasn’t been out much ever since. He’s now embarking on his first tour since The Doo-Wops & Hooligans Tour in 2010.

He spoke with Ryan Seacrest a day before the first tour date and noted that it’s all about the music.

“I want the music to be more rockin’ than the visual effects. I prefer [a show] that’s a bit more raw,” he said.

Bruno Mars is beloved by his thousands of fans and his tour is expected to bring in one sell-out crowd after another. Before the show on Saturday, he even took to Twitter and posted a message to all of his fans.

He showed excitement in his tweet that we haven’t seen in a while, so he’s obviously ready to take the stage throughout the summer.

FIRST SHOW! Yes im excited. Yes Im all the way turnt up and Yes my lip gloss is poppin

.The next stop on the Moonshine Jungle tour is Monday in Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center before he moves on to Boston. The tour will make stops in Canada through the end of July and he will eventually make his way to Europe in the beginning of October.

Opening night in the nation’s capital must have been a success as Bruno Mars tweeted once again saying, “Thank you DC! last night was magical for me. WE BACK AT IT!!!”
