Brett Favre is neither the first, and definitely not the last, celebrity figure to get involved in politics and whether you think that’s a good thing or not, he is making sure that his support for one particular Senator is heard loudly and clearly.
On Wednesday the U.S. Chamber of Commerce released a fourth-quarter commercial , featuring an endorsement by Favre of Senator Thad Cochran.
Politico reported that Favre tells viewers in the short ad: “Thad Cochran always delivers, just like he did during Katrina.”
The reason for the Brett Favre endorsement at this strategic time?
It may have something to do with the fact that earlier in June, Cochran came second in the opening round of the GOP primaries. Chris McDaniel, Cochran’s Tea Party nemesis, will have a second chance to pip Thad Cochran to the post during a run-off election on Tuesday.
McDaniel’s campaign has been a strong one, despite the fact that Cochran has a great track record when it comes to securing federal funds for Mississippi. McDaniel’s clever campaign is based on a general conservative disapproval of President Obama.
According to a report in The New York Times this week, voters in Mississippi believe that rival candidate McDaniel can do a better job than Senator Cochran. If the majority of voters side with McDaniel it would usher in a new era for the state, but at the expense of Cochran’s strong leadership.
Brett Favre ‘s advert attempts to remind voters of everything that is good about Thad Cochran in the hope that he will retain his seat:
“I’ve learned through football that strong leadership makes the difference between winning and losing. and when it comes to our state’s future, trust me: Mississippi can win and win big with Thad Cochran,” said the former Green Bay Packers star confidently.
Whether or not Thad Cochran will indeed enjoy the same wide support he has enjoyed thus far remains to be seen. The question is, when voters go to the ballot boxes next week to decide who will lead Mississippi, to what extent will their decision depend on the endorsement of Brett Favre?
