Breaking News: Updates to Come

The New York City marathon is officially over — at least for a few runners.

Wilson Kipsang of Kenya is the official winner of the marathon and Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopa won second place, reports ABC affiliate in New York, ABC7 .

Kenyan runner Mary Keitany has won the women’s division of the 2014 New York City marathon. Breaking news flashes of the race, which is in its 44th year, from both local NBC affiliate and The Associated Press say that Keitany is the first person in her division to cross the finish line.

The New York City marathon is the largest marathon in the world. It draws tens of thousands of runner from all over the world and shuts down large swaths of the city as runners traverse a route that takes them through parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

This year, there were 50,000 runners who had to deal with very cold, blustery weather. Some wind gusts were over 40 miles per hour and the wind gusts blew up to 30 MPH.

In 2013, another Kenyan, Geoffrey Mutai, won first place in the man’s division of the New York City marathon. If he had won this year, it would have been his third year in a row as the champion.

Mutai and Kipsang already faced off last year in the Berlin Marathon, but they didn’t meet in that race in 2014. Kipsang went straight to the New York City marathon and skipped Berlin.

“It’s really cool because part of my dreams has been to run all the major races, to get the challenge and see what I can really do,” he told ABC7 .
