When 10-year-old Gryffin Sanders’ great-grandmother suffered a minor heart attack while driving 60 mph down the highway he didn’t panic. And why would he? After all, he does have years of experience playing Mario Kart.

According the Indy Channel, Sanders managed to take the wheel of his great grandmother’s Buick Sedan and guide the car down the highway. He eventually got the car over to the side of the road and made a safe landing in a pile of mud.

Sanders said that he was driving with his great-grandmother Darlene Nester on a Colorado highway when she stopped speaking mid-sentence. Sanders tried to rouse his great-grandmother but she wasn’t responding. He then jumped out of his seat to grab the wheel.

He couldn’t reach the brakes and his great-grandmother’s foot was still pressing down on the gas. Still, Sanders managed to keep the car on the road until his Darlene’s foot eventually slipped off the pedal and the car slowed down to a stop.

Sanders said: “My grandma great was talking about some of the wildlife and stuff about the Great Plains when she passed out in the middle of a sentence. I could see over the dashboard while I was driving, so I had an idea of where I was driving into. I couldn’t get to the brakes because my grandma great was in the way… There was one car that was pretty far away. I just drove the car to the right.”

Sanders told the International Business Times that he was such a good driver because he has plenty of Mario Kart experience.

The 10-year-old flagged down a car and had the driver call 911. His great-grandmother was taken to the hospital and is now recovering from a minor heart attack.

Nestor said: “I’m so proud of him that he saved so many lives that day even in oncoming traffic… He’s always been a great kid. All my great grandkids and grandkids are great.”
