Bono is apparently very grateful for his late-night meals, as proven by a $150 tip the U2 frontman recently left.
The singer went to a late-night diner after his band played a show at the famed Los Angeles venue, The Roxy, and there he ordered a Reuben sandwich with french fries and onion rings. Though the meal came to less than $20 in total — that includes chocolate rugelach for dessert — Bono decided to leave a $150 tip for the lucky waitress.
The gesture may have been Bono’s way to pay it forward after what Us Weekly noted had been a difficult month for U2. Their longtime tour manager, Dennis Sheehan, was found dead in his hotel room in May, the victim of an apparent heart attack.
“We’ve lost a family member, we’re still taking it in,” Bono wrote on U2’s website . “He wasn’t just a legend in the music business, he was a legend in our band. He is irreplaceable.”
Bono himself has been hobbled, unable to play guitar after a bike accident that forced him to undergo surgery to repair his arm and hand.
The band had to cancel a number of concerts while Bono recovered.
“I really used to think that my head was harder than any surface it came in contact with, and I don’t anymore,” he told the New York Times . “I didn’t come off a Harley-Davidson. I came off a push bike and smashed myself to bits. There is no glory here.”
U2 also stoked a bit of controversy in the last year when iTunes users found that Apple gifted the band’s newest CD to their accounts — whether they wanted it or not. The unexpected addition to the playlist angered many fans, who took to Twitter and other social media to complain.
The $150 tip wasn’t the only generous gesture Bono made. He and his U2 bandmates showed up on the New York City subway last month for an unannounced concert . The group was paying on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and decided to open up their rehearsal for some of the millions of New Yorkers who take to the subways each day.
The band stayed only for a little bit — not wanting to tie up the already clogged subway — and performed three songs, “Beautiful Day,” “Angel of Harlem,” and the new single, “Song for Someone.” While his most recent generous act has gotten quite a bit of press, Bono may have also caused himself some trouble with the $150 tip. It’s certainly a difficult standard to live up to now every time he wants a late night snack.
