Billy Corgan, most famously known as the front man for the Smashing Pumpkins, has made the tough decision to leave Resistance Pro Wrestling to pursue another passion. Instead of new Smashing Pumpkin news, Corgan plans to create a 20 minute musical about religious rites in ancient Greece. Billy shared news of his leave from Resistance Pro Wrestling via Twitter.
Billy Corgan co-founded Resistance Pro Wrestling in 2011 and still has a passion for the sport. However, he feels it is time to move on to another side project. Corgan has submitted his 20-minute Greek musical to “The 48-Hour Musicals,” which will be featured as the concluding act. “The 48-Hour Musicals” will be performed at The Music Theatre Company in Highland Park, Illinois. Corgan shared his interest in musicals with Broadway World .
“My interest in musical theatre has grown throughout the years. Ms. Redish, I believe, is a visionary; she’s inspired me to jump into the narrative form in a fresh way.”
Founding Artistic Director Jessica Beth Redish shared that she is thrilled to have Corgan aboard.
“We are thrilled to be revisiting these pieces which ultimately inspired future TMTC commissions and to be premiering a work by Billy Corgan in this year’s line up.”
Billy Corgan has not left the Smashing Pumpkins, as is evident by their forthcoming album. However, he joined the world of wrestling to give himself some variety, according to Billboard .
“I was attracted to wrestling as a child because there was something larger than life about it, which was also what attracted me to rock ‘n’ roll.”
He added more to his statement through a tweet.
“If you’re looking for the genuinely subversive and spontaneous, wrestling is where it’s at. In my 25 years of playing in music, I’ve seen where rock ‘n’ roll has really been codified in a really lame way. It’s ruled by a bunch of nerds with laptops… [wrestling] still gives me that feeling of anything can happen, where in my business, it’s f***ing boring.”
Although Billy Corgan referred to many individuals in the music industry as nerds, he was attempting to give a visual to the staleness that he has experienced. Whereas acting and wrestling are open for interpretation and have the ability to transcend imagination, much like music that the Smashing Pumpkins have been involved in.
Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins’ next album is due out on December 9, titled “Monuments to an Elegy,” and his 20-minute Greek musical is set to debut on December 14.
