Billboard released their Billboard 200 album chart this morning and there is good news for Taylor Swift , but bad news for Shawn Mendes. It’s a complete reverse of fortunes from last week’s album chart. Last week, Billboard described Mendes ‘ temporary victory.
“Sixteen-year old Shawn Mendes has grown from Vine stardom to topping the Billboard 200 chart, as his debut full-length album Handwritten arrives at No. 1. The set, which was released on April 14 through Island Records, starts with 119,000 units earned in the week ending April 19, according to Nielsen Music.”
Shawn Mendes, who will be touring with Taylor Swift, made an almost record-breaking drop to No. 17 this week (83 percent) from No.1, while Taylor Swift moves up from No. 7 to No. 6. 1989 was in the top five for 25 weeks, but fell out last week. Judging from this week’s upward mobility, it looks like Swift could enter the top five once again. If Taylor Swift put her album on Spotify, she would no doubt still be in the top five. Time Magazine recently asked Taylor Swift why she left the popular music streaming service.
“Well, they can still listen to my music if they get it on iTunes. I’m always up for trying something. And I tried it and I didn’t like the way it felt. I think there should be an inherent value placed on art. I didn’t see that happening, perception-wise, when I put my music on Spotify. Everybody’s complaining about how music sales are shrinking, but nobody’s changing the way they’re doing things. They keep running towards streaming, which is, for the most part, what has been shrinking the numbers of paid album sales.”
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift isn’t letting the success of 1989 go to her head. She is still down to earth and finds time to play with her cats. Taylor’s beau Calvin Harris is a big fan of Swift’s cats according to E Online .
“Let’s begin with the most important photo of the night: Calvin’s ‘Moment’ with cats Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson. The sexy DJ/model isn’t actually in the snap, but it lets us know he’s spending some quality time with Tay’s nearest and dearest.”
Taylor Swift is going to have a very busy schedule, so one can hope her cats continue to receive the attention they deserve. Besides preparing her next single and video release for “Bad Blood,” Swift is going to start her tour in support of 1989 in May. Taylor Swift will be the first female singer since Madonna to headline a stadium tour in the United States. Who would have thought six years ago that Taylor Swift would become such a musical icon?
