Beyonce and Solange Knowles were a little too busy to attend their father Mathew Knowles’ wedding. Beyonce’s little sister played at the Superdome last night for Essence Fest and Beyonce will take the stage tonight.
Mathew Knowles married Gena Avery this weekend in Houston, Texas after a year and a half engagement. Apparently, Mr. Knowles didn’t coordinate with his daughters about their plans over Fourth of July weekend.
Matthew said: “Unfortunately, Beyonce and Solange had previous engagements which made it impossible for them to attend.”
Solange Knowles isn’t known as a stadium singer (she’s a little more Indie than her big sister) but she held her own in front of the Essence Fest crowd.
The singer draws inevitable comparisons to her big sister but Solange stated back in 2009 on the song “God Given Name” that she is “not becoming expectations. I’m not her and never will be.”
Solange does share her sister’s sense of style but musically they’re pretty different. Solange has no problem stepping back and letting her band mates take center stage for instrumental solos but knows when to take over and make the crowd dance.
NOLA.com notes that the singer got the crowd moving when the singer played her hit “Losing You.”
Beyonce takes the stage at Essence Fest in New Orleans tonight.
