Beats Audio, the company partly owned by HTC (51% interest) is rumored to have acquired music service MOG. The rumor was started by a single source for Business Insider who claims that the deal was struck last week. The source says details of the deal have not been revealed and when asked about the rumor MOG was non-committal.
According to an MOG spokesperson:
“We’re always looking for the best opportunity for our business and shareholders, but don’t comment on specifics of those conversations. Nothing to confirm at this time.”
HTC at one point launched a music platform of its own called the “Listen” service but the company quietly backed out of that particular sector when it failed to grab any feasible market share.
At this point its believed that MOG could be integrated into future HTC phones while offering similar integration for any company’s willing to sign on the dotted line. A likely target for future partnerships would be Hewlett Packard which already offers Beats Audio integration for various HP laptops.
In the meantime the unlimited music streaming field is already overcrowded with options available for the likes of Spotify , Rdio, Pandora and others. If HTC wants to succeed the company will need to better market the MOG service to their millions of smartphone users, something they failed to properly do with the Listen platform.
