The footage we’ve seen of Battlefield 4 , most of which has been mostly focused on multiplayer, suggested that China would play some sort of major role in the game’s singleplayer campaign . As it happens, that is the case – in fact, China will be the enemy.
Sort of. It gets complicated.
In a recent post on EA’s website , the publisher revealed that Battlefield 4 ‘s singleplayer campaign will put players in the boots of one Sergeant Daniel Recker, member of the “Tombstone” squad.
The game starts off with Recker and his squad rounding up a defecting Russian General, who apparently has some very important intel, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Naturally, things don’t turn out as planned; your squad gets discovered, and you have to shoot your way through Russian soldiers to get to your extraction point.
That intel, as it turns out, is indeed very important.
“Upon getting back to the USS Valkyrie, a Wasp class carrier, the intelligence you’ve retrieved confirms previous suspicions,” the post reads. “The Chinese Admiral Chang is planning a coup in China, and if this happens, the Russians would back him up.”
To make matters even more complicated, the U.S. government was implicated in the assassination of Jin Jié, who the country considered “the future leader and voice for peace in China.” Nevertheless, the Tombstone squad is immediately sent out to Shanghai to attend to related matters.

Although the singleplayer campaign in Battlefield 3 was hardly its strongest suit, it sounds, based off of EA’s synopsis of Battlefield 4 ‘s early events, that DICE and the writers behind the first-person shooter sequel are looking to try something a little different.
