In Toronto, a newborn baby was pronounced dead after an outdoor birth. Covered with a sheet at the hospital, two police officers noticed the infant was still alive just before the coroner showed up to claim the body.
The mother was not feeling that day well and decided to go to the hospital. She did not make it and gave birth to a baby girl outside, in sub-zero temperatures.
Accompanied by the child’s grandmother, the 20-year old and her infant were rushed to Humber River Hospital’s Finch Street campus via ambulance.
According to CBC News, the baby was taken care of in the hospital’s trauma unit but had no vital signs. She was put under a sheet and pronounced dead, “after some time.”
Following protocol, two police officers waited with the “dead” baby for the coroner to show up. It was then, nearly two hours later, the officer’s noticedmovement under the sheet. They investigated and discovered the baby was, in fact, alive.
Toronto Police Constable Wendy Drummond says:
“In this particular situation, it was a matter of being in the right place at the right time. The officers were on a very sad detail…it was when they noticed the sheet moving that they were able to investigate a little bit further and detect a pulse.”
Humber River Hospital did not respond by requests from The Star in Canada for comment. This mishap should not affect Canada’s ranking as one of the top 10 countries to give birth .
The baby, originally pronounced dead, is currently in stable condition along with her mother. Miracle or not, this is an amazing tale of life winning out over death. Sometimes we forgot the fight that exists in humans at even the youngest ages to survive extreme circumstances.
