‘Avengers 2’: Joss Whedon Hints At Mutants

Avengers 2 might include a couple of mutants, Joss Whedon almost confirmed.

Joss Whedon all but confirmed plans to include a pair of siblings that we thought were off limits for Disney’s Marvel franchise. Not only are mutants practically an exclusive property of Fox, but these two in particular are related to a major character in all but one of the X-Men films.

Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are the children of Magneto, and are the only siblings known to be involved with the Avengers. Unless Joss Whedon is planning to break canon and make Hank Pym (Ant Man) and Janet Van Dyne (Wasp) brother and sister instead of a couple, it’s the only logical conclusion.

What Joss Whedon said was, “I’ve got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic books … a brother/sister act. They’re in the movie, that’s exciting.”

Joss Whedon gave us this hint at the Iron Man 3 premier last night, and it makes us wonder if he might do what Brett Ratner did with Juggernaut in X-Men: The Last Stand , ignoring his familial relationship with Charles Xavier. Otherwise how can he keep Magneto out of the story if Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are involved?

Other brother and sister acts in the Marvel universe include; Johnny and Susan Storm of the Fantastic Four, Cannonball and Husk, Aurora and Northstar, Cable and Rachel Grey … we could go on, but aside from the first two, every pair of siblings in the Marvel Universe are X-Men, and considered off limits for the Avengers franchise.

Much like Val Kilmer said in Batman Forever , Joss Whedon’s statement just raises too many questions. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has given us what may be the loophole that settles the issue. He said that in the case of Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver, specifically, the rights came down to whoever got to them first.

Joss Whedon has officially finished writing the rough draft of the script and says he’s already feeling the pressure after seeing Iron Man 3 last night.

What do you think of Joss Whedon’s hint that mutants may be in Avengers 2 ?
