Autographed Jim Carrey Photo Offered On eBay So Seller Can Afford A Gun

Jim Carrey’s recent mocking of Charlton Heston and the Second Amendment has inspired vengeful eBay users to set up protest auctions.

eBay user “astrobuzz” started the trend on Wednesday, listing an autographed photo of Carrey and promising to use the proceeds to fund the purchase of a gun . Indeed, the auction title said it all: “Jim Carrey Autographed 8X10 Photo So I Can Afford a Gun!”

Oddly, the auction description was somewhat more coy than the bold title: “I’m selling this Jim Carrey autographed B&W photo (mint condition) for purposes I cannot explain because it might be against eBay’s Terms Conditions.”

Alas, astrobuzz’s plan was quickly scuppered. eBay swiftly removed the auction, along with similar lots that cropped up in the wake of the listing. The auction site has not yet commented on the removal of the listings.

astrobuzz and his fellow gun-lovers were protesting Carrey’s starring role in a new Funny or Die video . The six-minute clip, entitled “Cold Dead Hand,” featured Carrey disparaging gun owners, Second Amendment advocates and the late Charlton Heston, former head of the NRA.

The signed Carrey photo in astrobuzz’s auction, which came with an inscription of “Spank you very much!”, had attracted a high bid of $860 by Wednesday afternoon. The auction also succeeded in creating a buzz amongst gun enthusiasts, with the “Questions from other members” section at the bottom of the listing turned into a hotbed of political debate and anti-Carrey remarks. All comments disappeared along with the auction.

The listing also attracted the attention of Carrey himself. The 51-year-old Mask actor took to Twitter to warn followers:

A lot of the autographs you’ll buy 4 guns online r fakes.Jokes on both buyer and seller. Not to mention the karma.Your luck will be bad.;^)
