Auburn Football Player Dead: Jakell Mitchell Killed In Shooting At Off Campus College Party

Auburn football player Jakell Mitchell is dead. ABC News is reporting that Jakell Mitchell was shot and killed at a college party close to the university campus during the early morning hours on Sunday. Police dispatchers received an emergency call alerting them to the shooting. When deputies arrived at the crime scene around 12:30 a.m, they found the body of an 18-year-old black male with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. The man was identified as Jakell Mitchell from Opelika, Alabama. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The shooting took place in some off campus apartments close to Auburn University’s main campus. Today, his friends, family, and fellow football players are morning his death.

Mike Clardy, a representative of Auburn University, released the following statement regarding Jakell Mitchell’s untimely death.

“The thoughts and prayers of all of us at Auburn University are with the Mitchell family during this difficult time.”

Auburn Police Department issued a statement and brief summary of events regarding the Jakell Mitchell murder case, according to the Montgomery Advertiser .

“Auburn Police and EAMC EMS received a 911 call early Sunday morning at about 12:28 AM to a possible gunshot victim. The incident occurred at a residence in the 200 block of West Longleaf Drive in Auburn. Eighteen-year-old Jakell Lenard Mitchell, of Opelika was rushed to East Alabama Medical Center by ambulance with apparent multiple gunshot wounds and died shortly after arrival at the emergency room from his injuries.”

The Auburn police department goes on to say that the freshman player’s death is considered a homicide.

“Due to the ongoing investigation no other information is being released at this time. The death is being treated as a homicide and Mitchell’s body has been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences medical examiner’s office in Montgomery for a postmortem examination. Mitchell was an Auburn University student and a member of the Auburn football team. The case remains under investigation by the Auburn Police, Lee County Coroner’s Office and the Alabama Dept. of Forensic Sciences. Anyone with any information concerning this incident is asked to call the Auburn Police Department.?”

There have been no arrests of any suspects in the death of Jakell Mitchell at this time. On Mitchell’s Facebook page, he described himself as funny, tall, and an outgoing person who loved sports, football, Adidas tennis shoes, and parties. Everyone who knew Jakell Mitchell, especially his college football coaches at Auburn, say that he was a genuinely nice guy and a pleasure to coach. Earlier this month, the Inquisitr reported on the death of Ryan Brooks, a Faulkner University freshman football player in Alabama.
