Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation released to moderate reviews thanks to its breathtaking imagery, a decent but sometimes inconsistent gameplay engine, and fairly addictive storyline. Despite some shortcomings, the game is also apparently well writte,n according to the Writers Guild of America (WGA).

Assassin’s Creed 3 was awarded this week with the “Outstanding Achievement in Video Game Writing” award by the WGA.

Credited with writing the script are Richard Farrese and Jill Murray.

To win the award, Assassin’ Creed 3 faced some stiff competition from 007 Legends , Assassin’s Creed 3 , Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, Halo 4, and Uncharted: Golden Abyss .

To be nominated for the award, the nominees must be part of the Video Game Writers Caucus. That requirement has caused the WGA to come under fire over the last year.

Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation introduced the series’ first ever female protagonist in Aveline de Grandpre.

Since announcing the “outstanding achievement in video game writing” award, the Writers Guild of America has awards the following games with the top writing honor:

“ Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception , Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood , Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed .”

It should be noted that the award is based purely on the games storyline as told by its writers. Graphics, game play, sales, user and expert reviews, and other aspects of Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation were not included in the groups decision.

Assassin’s Creed 3 scored an 8.6 out of 10 review by video gaming website IGN.

Do you think Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation deserved to win the WGA award for best written video game of 2012?
