The fourth season of Arrested Development on Netflix is quickly approaching, and now we finally have a first look at what to expect from the series’ revival.
The last time we saw the Bluth family was in 2006, when — despite critical acclaim — Arrested Development was canceled by Fox due to low ratings.
If you need a refresher, here’s how season 3 ended (spoiler alerts, obviously).
After celebrating a victory, in which the US government dropped all the charges against patriarch regarding the mini-palaces George Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor) built in Iraq, the family celebrates with a shareholder’s party similar to the one seen in the very first episode.
During the preparation for the party, it is revealed that Lindsay (Portia de Rossi) is adopted, meaning George Michael (Michael Cera) and Maeby (Alia Shawkat) aren’t really cousins. It is also revealed that Lucille’s (Jessica Walters) adopted son, Annyong (Justin Lee) wanted to get revenge on the Bluth family for stealing his grandfather’s frozen banana idea and causing his deportation.
Annyong turns over evidence that implicates Lucillle in the Bluth Company’s acounting scandals and, before the police arrive, Michael (Jason Bateman) and George Michael escape on Gob’s (Will Arnett) yacht. In the epilogue, we find out that George Sr. tricked his twin brother Oscar (also played by Tambor) into taking his place yet again. We also see Maeby trying to sell the television rights to the Bluth family story to Ron Howard, who says he’d rather see it as a movie than a TV series.
Season 4 takes place six years after Arrested Development ‘s cancellation, and will feature a different format than the first three seasons. Each of the 15 new episodes will focus on an individual character and will explore the character’s activities since the third season finale. Every episode happens at the same time within the show’s universe. Bateman said about the new format, “If I’m driving down the street in my episode, and Gob’s going down the sidewalk in his Segway, you could stop my episode, go into his episode, and follow him and see where he’s going.”
In anticipation of the season 4 debut, a Bluth’s Frozen Banana Stand campaign was launched on the streets of New York last week.
