Rumors have been rampant this past week that Madonna and ex-flame Sean Penn have reignited a romance after being spotted spending time together on several occasions in Santa Monica, California. A source told the NY Post of witnessed quality time between the material girl and Penn during which the two were “just kicking it” at the hotel bar.
Earlier this month, while Madonna performed in Vancouver, Penn sat front row along with funny girl Amy Schumer. Wonderwall notes Penn’s demeanor while enjoying his ex’s performance.
“[Penn] was photographed grinning and staring up at his former wife as she performed. While one insider assured that Sean is ‘the love of [Madonna’s] life,’ another dismissed the notion that they’re back together, saying, ‘It’s much ado about nothing. They’re friends. Who knows how close they really are after all these years?’”
Madge and Penn have been spending more time together than they have in years since Penn and ex Charlize Theron went their separate ways earlier this year. Penn has been through a couple difficult situations in addition to the split, which seems to have been reason for his enjoying time with Madonna who gives the Mystic River star a bit of companionship and support.
One issue in particular, as noted by the Post , involves a defamation lawsuit which Penn filed in the amount of $10 million. Reason for legal action came after Sean was made out to have physically harmed Madonna during their relationship. Lee Daniels, who is co-creator of Empire , was defending one of the show’s stars Terrence Howard’s “reported violence against women.” The Post shares Daniels’ words which the lawsuit was derived from.
“[Howard] ain’t done nothing different than Marlon Brando or Sean Penn, and all of a sudden he’s some [bleeping] demon.”
All of this drudged up the past allegations brought against Penn in regard to Madonna, from 1988, when Sean was accused of tying Madge to a chair and attacking her. The actor’s lawsuit involved clarifying that he had never been arrested or charged for any violence against the pop star.
“Penn (unlike Howard) has never been arrested, much less convicted, for domestic violence, as his ex-wives (including Madonna) would confirm and attest.”
Madonna recently shared about Penn and relayed how much things have changed between the two in the past decades.
“I did a show at Madison Square Garden the other night.?.?. and my ex-husband was there! Could you imagine?”Thirty years earlier.?.?. he was very upset with me for wearing a costume that was too revealing. That’s not a lie! After the show he wrote me a letter and said he finally appreciates my art.”
Although it seems a bit convenient that the two are spending more time together in the wake of Penn’s defamation suit against Daniels, it is clear that Madonna and Penn share a mutual affection for one another. Whether Madonna is the love of Penn’s life or simply a shoulder to lean on during the legal situation, they appear to have a close bond. Penn’s daughter Dylan voiced her view of Penn and Madge’s relationship, recently while at Madonna’s concert at Madison Square Gardens.
“I think he just really admires her work. They’re just really good friends and [I think] it’s sweet that they can have this relationship.”
It certainly would be an exciting turn of events for the ex-flames to reignite the fire between them. For now it’s definitely warming to see that the pair can call each other good friends after so many years and so much history. Additionally, Penn admitting that he respects Madonna’s art after decades of not truly understanding it is welcome to Madonna fans everywhere.
