In an attempt to steal customers away from Research In Motion’s Blackberry devices Apple on Monday announced iMessage, a mobile phone instant messenger meant to lure Blackberry Messenger users to the company’s iOS platform. Much like it’s competitor the company plans to offer SMS-free messaging, deliver and sending receipts, group messaging capabilities and live typing notifications.
The company is also promising 3G and Wi-Fi use which is not available to Blackberry Messenger users. Users will also be able to push locations with photos, videos and contacts.
The official iMessage program is expected to be unveiled for iOS 5 when it releases in Fall 2011.
RIM at this time is not commenting on Apple’s proposed iMessage system.
