A statue of Amy Winehouse was supposed to have been unveiled at the Roundhouse later this month. However, her father, Mitch, has decided that he doesn’t like it and has stopped the ceremony.
The Roundhouse is a mile away from the singer’s former home in Camden Square, where she died in 2011 after drug and alcohol intoxication. Winehouse performed for the last time at the Roundhouse, three days before her death, and the statue is to be placed on a terrace overlooking Chalk Farm road.
The statue depicts the singer standing, with her famous beehive hairstyle, wearing a retro-style dress. Its full title is “ The Amy Winehouse Memorial Statue ,” and it is a life-size bronze, the work of sculptor London-based Scott Eaton.
When the original idea for a statue was mooted, Mitch commented to The London Evening Standard, “Amy was a wonderful person who did a lot for Camden and for kids. She was one of the greatest singers the world has ever known, so why shouldn’t we put a statue up?”
Winehouse’s former boyfriend Reg Traviss told the Mail on Sunday that Mitch wants the statue to be just right. “He doesn’t want anything to go up that he’s not completely satisfied with. But obviously it’s never going to look exactly like her,” Traviss told the newspaper.
So far, there has been no further word as to how this impasse will be resolved, the problem being that the statue of Amy Winehouse has been completed, and is ready to be unveiled.
