American Sniper has become the best-selling war movie ever, but a recent report predicts it won’t win the Oscar because of the infamous fake baby scene.
If this is indeed the excuse The Academy will use not to recognize the movie that has not only made millions beyond anyone’s dreams, but has sparked incredible controversy, it would be a dark day in Hollywood. It is well documented that voting members are not only casting their ballots while considering a film’s merit, but what the politics of the films are.
American Sniper has a couple of things against it. Not only the fake baby scene, but its director, Clint Eastwood, who while respected for his craft, is also slighted because of his conservative political views. Remember the chair monologue during the 2012 presidential campaign ?
The fake baby scene, which takes place when the American Sniper, Chris Kyle, is cradling his infant baby girl while on break from his Iraq tours, was explained by screenplay writer Jason Hall on Twitter. “Hate to ruin the fun but real baby #1 showed up with a fever. Real baby #2 was no show. (Clint voice) Gimme the doll, kid,” Hall said.
According to a the Hollywood Reporter , shooting in California poses problems when using infants for a shoot because of the strict regulations.
“Infants must be at least 15 days old, and babies from that age up to six months can be employed for only one period of two consecutive hours in any given day. Moreover, that time frame has to be between 9:30-11:30 a.m. or from 2:30-4:30 p.m., and one studio teacher along with one nurse must be on set during filming.”
Those who want to see American Sniper slighted at the Oscars ceremony are using any and all arguments at their disposal. Since the acting was brilliant — Bradley Cooper gained his third nomination in a row — and the message powerful, leaving moviegoers stunned and quiet, the best thing to pick on is the fake baby.
American Sniper has raked in $307 million worldwide, thus far, on a budget of $58 million and has most certainly started a conversation. There are decided opinions on both sides, those who support the troops and the likes of Chris Kyle, the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history.
Detractors have voiced their opinion loudly as well, with several celebrities and high-profile personalities slamming the tactics used by snipers. However, the success of American Sniper with the public is undeniable and now it’s a matter of seeing if The Academy will agree and give it the Oscar.
