Amazon is closing in on the 5 million Kindles sold mark according to one analyst and they are now expected to pass that level by the end of 2010. While the number is not quite as high as Apple iPad sales, it’s nearly 60 percent higher than Bloomberg analysts had predicted for the eReader series early in the year and will mean nearly 8 million units sold to date.

In 2009 Amazon sold approximately 2.4 million Kindles, however there were less options available to users who can now choose between various eReaders from Amazon with WiFi, 3G and WiFi + 3G capabilities.

Groups closing in on the 5 million estimate include Caris & Co. who predict 4.8 million units, Goldman Sachs Groups Inc, predicting four to five million units and Citigroup, Barclay Capital Partners LP and ThinkEquity LLC all predicting the 5 million level.

Amazon doesn’t release their overall sales numbers for the Kindle series, but they did mention that in July they had surpassed sales totals compared to the fourth quarter of 2009.
