The New York Knicks will be without Amare Stoudemire for two to three weeks after he suffered a ruptured popliteal cyst behind his left knee. The announcement was made by the Knicks after Sunday afternoon’s practice at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York.

Stoudemire had his knee re-evaluated on Sunday morning after he suffered a bruise following an October 10 practice. Team officials confirmed the injury after MRI results were revealed.

Amare is no stranger to left knee injuries. He suffered from a microfracture to the same knee in October 2005, an injury that put him under the knife. Following his first knee injury, Amare missed most of the 2005-2006 season.

Not one to sit down and give up, Amare Stoudemire came back stronger than ever and has since played continually despite chronic knee problems, a partially detached retina in his right eye, and lower back issues.

Entering the 2012-2013 season, team officials and analysts believed Stoudemire was in top career shape as he barely ever missed a two-a-day practice. Even coach Mike Woodson praised Stoudemire’s conditioning throughout training camp.

Based on current estimate, Stoudemire will miss the team’s November 1 season opener and possibly games against the Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers.

It hasn’t been a good year for Amare, who was fined $50,000 in June after he tweeted a gay slur. Amare also injured himself slightly when he punched the emergency glass surrounding a fire extinguisher.

Do you think Amare Stoudemire is wearing down his body too quickly for an extended NBA career?
