Actress Amandla Stenberg and whatever-she-is Kylie Jenner are in a social media feud after the actress called out the celebutante for wearing cornrows, the Washington Post is reporting .
The kerfuffle began on Sunday, when the 17-year-old Kylie posted a photo of herself on Instagram, rocking the cornrows.
“I woke up like disss”
Hunger Games star Amandla Stenberg, 16, who is mixed-race, was not impressed. The actress, who played Rue, didn’t care for a white girl/woman sporting a traditionally black hairstyle.
“When u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter.”
Oh snap!
Kylie, however, wasn’t going to let the upbraiding of her hair style stand without a diss of her own.
“Mad if I don’t, Mad if I do … Go hang w Jaden or something.”
The “Jaden” reference was a dig at Amandla’s reported relationship with Jaden Smith — Amandla and Jaden were rumored to be an item for a while earlier this year, according to this Inquisitr report.
On Monday, Amandla posted her thoughts on Twitter, without directly mentioning Kylie or her cornrows, about white women sporting traditionally black styles.
“Black features are beautiful. Black women are not. White women are paragons of virtue and desire. Black women are objects of fetishism and brutality.”
Amandla seems to have a problem in general with cultural appropriation , according to Hollywood Life . In a series of YouTube videos, the actress called out Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and Taylor Swift for using black culture as a way to be “edgy” and “gain attention.”
To be fair, it looks like Amandla Stenberg may be waging her crusade against Kylie’s cornrows alone: the majority of the comments on Kylie’s Instagram post are supportive of her style, or at the very least, brushing off accusations of racism.
“I don’t really understand why everybody so mad about one 17 year old girls hair. it’s hair. her hair. and what ever she styles it as is her own choice. cultures do not own hairstyles. people just need to stop making this a bigger thing than it already is. ITS A HAIRSTYLE.”
Amanda, for her part, seems to be “over” the whole business.
