Alice Eve is apologizing for comments she made about Bruce Jenner many interpreted as transphobic, with the Star Trek actress saying she never intended them to offend anyone.

Eve’s comments appeared to be an attempt to discuss disadvantages women face. In a post to Instagram that was since deleted, Even wrote that if Jenner “were a woman, no one would have even heard of you because women can’t compete in the decathlon.” The comments came just days after the 65-year-old Jenner confirmed in an interview with 20/20 that he is transitioning to a woman.

But Alice Eve appeared to disparage Bruce Jenner and his plans to transition to a woman.

“Until women are paid the same as men, then playing at being a ‘woman’ while retaining the benefits of being a man is unfair,” she wrote, adding, “Do you have a vagina? Are you paid less than men? Then, my friend, you are a woman.”

On Tuesday, Alice Eve apologized for the comments and said she did not mean them to be offensive.

“I deeply apologize for offending anyone,” wrote the actress in a statement released to People . “I support equal rights and equal dignity for all. I have deep compassion and support for Bruce Jenner.”

Alice added that she was trying to make a larger point about equality, one that was lost in the perceived transphobia.

“My intention was not to offend,” she said. “My intention was simply to express that, with the overdue and welcome acceptance of us all living on a gender spectrum, we must encourage equality for all.”

Alice Eve is not the only one to stoke controversy over a response to Bruce Jenner’s announcement. Kris Humphries , the former husband to his step-daughter, Kim Kardashian, appeared to slam Bruce on Twitter after the announcement.

“Man, I’m glad I got out when I did,” he wrote, adding the hashtag #Gottadoyou.

Like Alice Eve, Kris Humphries was met with anger from many people, who also called him out.

But the NBA player later explained that he did not mean to insult Bruce Jenner.

“I have and always will support Bruce hence #Gottadoyou. Now recognize I was too vague and sincerely apologize for the way this came across,” he explained on Twitter.

After her own controversy regarding the Bruce Jenner announcement, Alice Eve thanked followers for “engaging with me on the subject” and admitted that “maybe this needs a little thought.”
