Alexis Cain has become the first student with Down syndrome to join a sorority at Kentucky’s Murray State University.
Every parent wants what is best for their children, including acceptance. When Alexis’ mother Camme Cain heard that Alpha Sigma Alpha had accepted her daughter as one of their sorority sisters, she was overjoyed, albeit a little nervous.
“It was heartwarming,” Camme told WPSD Local 6 . “It’s something you wish every child with a handicap or disability could experience.”
“I was more nervous [than Alexis],” Camme added. “I’m surprised I didn’t get an ulcer from that week… [She dreamed about] how great it would be to have all these sisters. She talked about it all summer.”

While her sisters are referring to her as the girl who is changing Greek life, Alexis just thought it would be fun to be a part of a sorority. Over 250 girls pledged to be a part of Alpha Sigma Alpha , and Alexis was one of only 233 who accepted a bid.
“I think it’s cool they have me as a sister,” Alexis said.

“The vision of Alpha Sigma Alpha is to cultivate values and ideals in women who are known for their character and concern for others. Alpha Sigma Alpha inspires women to lead, to serve and most of all to make a difference.”
Apparently, the students at Murray State are holding true to their vision by accepting a sister that many wouldn’t have. Alexis’ sisters said she is helping to challenge the stigmas and norms associated with sororities and has become a part of their family, despite having Down syndrome.
“The outward appearance and the brand of a sorority doesn’t mater,” Sarah Willmore, a member of the sorority, said. “It’s the values you hold true.”

“I can confidently say she’s changed me, and I know she’s changed other girls on campus too,” Alli Friedline, Alexis’ friend, said.
