An Alaska cruise canceled for mechanical reasons has become the latest travel issue of its sort this year with passengers left without vacation plans.
The Alaska cruise canceled was a Celebrity Cruises voyage stymied by electronic issues on the boat that would compromise the trip.
USAToday says the Alaska cruise canceled was the latest setback for Celebrity Cruises, who have been “plagued by propulsion problems” in recent weeks. The paper reports :
“Celebrity said the Aug. 23, Aug. 30, Sept. 6 and Sept. 13 sailings of the 2,138-passenger Celebrity Millennium have been cancelled… The announcement came just hours after Celebrity ended this week’s sailing of the ship early in Ketchikan, Alaska, citing a mechanical problem with one of its two propulsion units. The vessel has been docked in the port town since the problem surfaced on Sunday.”
Celebrity Cruises tweeted out a statement with the full details after the Alaska cruise was canceled, confirming the axed dates and telling followers in a click-through statement :
“We are deeply sorry for this unexpected and disappointing development in our guests’ upcoming vacation… If you are booked on one of the cancelled sailings, Celebrity Cruises will provide you with a full, 100% refund. For your convenience, all monies paid will automatically be processed back to the original form of payment within the next three weeks. Celebrity Cruises will also provide you with a future cruise certificate. This certificate may be used for a future cruise on Celebrity Cruises.”

It is not clear whether passengers booked for the Alaska cruise canceled will receive a free cruise from the certificate, or just a discount, and it is not known how many passengers are affected by the cruise cancellation.
