The A-Rod lifetime suspension fight could get brutal. Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees came out swinging Friday night after a game with the Double-A Trenton Thunder .
He said that some unnamed parties would benefit if he never plays again — but not his teammates and not his fans. You can see a video of his statement right here .
As all baseball fans know, A-Rod faces a lifetime suspension from major league baseball. He is one of as many as 20 baseball players accused of getting performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) from a clinic called Biogenesis.
And he’s also accused of threatening witnesses and even trying to buy evidence that could link him to Biogenesis.
But Alex Rodriguez implied Friday night that the real reason behind the accusation is to get rid of his high-priced contract.
A Yahoo! Finance report said the Yankees still owe him $90 million. The Los Angeles Times puts the number at over $100 million .
Either way shedding Rodriguez, who is been out of play since October because of an injury, could save them a fortune.
If you watched that Associated Press video, you know that Alex Rodriguez said bluntly: “[W]hen all this stuff is going on in the background and people are finding creative ways to cancel your contract…that’s concerning for me…and I think it should be concerning for future players, as well.”
He expressed a hope of playing with the Yankees on Monday during the season opener at the Chicago White Sox.
But who knows if he’ll really be there? The New York Daily News has just posted a rumor that MLB officials are angry that he has basically accused them of conspiring with the Yankees to void his contract. Their unnamed source said he will be given a 214 game suspension. Their lengthy summary of the A-Rod PED case is well worth reading, but the bottom line is that right now it’s up in the air whether or not Alex Rodriguez will be on the playing field Monday night.
It’s even possible that the rumored A-Rod lifetime suspension is still on the table. We’ll update when we get more information.
