Gabrielle Giffords will meet with Diane Sawyer this week for an interview on ABC World News to be aired on the anniversary of the shooting that nearly claimed the Congresswoman’s life.
Giffords has rarely spoken about the January 2011 incident, but has given an interview to Diane Sawyer in a November 2011 appearance.
In January 2011, Giffords was making an appearance outside a supermarket in Tuscon, Arizona, when a gunman opened fire. The shooting left six people dead and 12 wounded, including Giffords. The representative was left partially blind in the attack, and has a paralyzed arm and brain injury as a result of being shot in the head.
Gabrielle Giffords’ interview with Diane Sawyer will be about a new initiative the representative and her husband are launching, The Hollywood Reporter noted . The interview will also be featured on other ABC News properties, including Good Morning America, Nightline , ABCNews.com, and local affiliates.
Giffords has been in headlines in recent weeks. After the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, that claimed 26 lives, Kelly addressed the tragedy and urged stricter gun control. Giffords herself met with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg , who has also called for more gun control nationwide.
The meeting, which was closed to the public, lasted about an hour, the New York Post reported .
Earlier, Giffords had traveled to Newtown to meet with families affected by the tragedy. She was joined by US Senator Richard Blumenthal.
