Pacific Rim has just landed a new trailer!
Guillermo del Toro’s latest alien invasion epic has swept the film community like a virus since the introduction of the first trailer. Giant aliens have crawled out of the Pacific Ocean and begun consuming Earth’s natural resources, and after several years, humans have invented and perfected Jaeger technology to fight them off. Jaegers are giant mech suits piloted by groups of people, harkening back to the days of classic anime cartoons such as Voltron .
According to the plot thus far revealed about Pacific Rim , the Jaeger program has come to a head and we have launched an all-out assault to destroy the aliens, known as Kaiju. The intensity promised in this film could exceed that of Michael Bay’s original Transformers , as giant mechs fight giant aliens for the fate of Earth.
The new trailer for Pacific Rim begins with a helicopter flying over a landing pad, followed by Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) telling his men to prepare for a maneuver called a “handshake.” We see two men in electronic suits in a landing bay of sorts as someone says, “Initiating neural handshake, 15 seconds.”
A man with headphones slams a metal piece into place on a large machine, and we get flashes of a suit-up procedure as a countdown begins. Someone says, “Release for drop,” and a Jaeger robot is dropped into the ocean. A woman looks on as two Jaegers appear to be waiting. We see a traffic jam with Kaiju feet just beyond, stomping it into oblivion. A jet flies through a battle zone, only to be destroyed in midair by a Kaiju.
A man in an armored suit walks along as Pentecost says, “Everyone? Listen up! Today, at the edge of our hope, the end of our time, we’ve chosen not only to believe in ourselves, but in each other! Today there’s not a man or woman in here that shall stand alone. Today we face the monsters that are at our door. Today we are canceling the apocalypse!”
Pacific Rim invades theaters July 12.
